Bill Kirchin with Albert & Gage | 12/19/22 | Palmer Events Center | On the final day of this year's Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, I saw an excellent performance by Bill Kirchen with Albert and Gage. Bill Kirchen is best known as the lead guitar player for Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, but he has called Austin home for many years. Husband and wife Christine Albert and Chris Gage are long time staples of the Austin folk music scene and are excellent musicians as well. They all took turns singing and backing one another on many Christmas-themed songs, some self-written, but none of the hackneyed ones that we've heard a million times. Bill closed the first set with his best-known song, "Hot Rod Lincoln". As he usually does these days, he demonstrated his amazing ability during the song to play in the guitar style of virtually everyone, including Johnny Cash, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and many more. Bill's wife Louise also joined them for a few songs each set, and overall it was a very entertaining and fun performance. Here are my photos from the show.
The Mellows | 12/19/22 | Continental Club | Our third and final stop on Monday was The Mellows at Continental Club. They are a new band to me. They played a mixture of 50's and early 60's rock, reminiscent of the Everly Brothers, some surf rock, and some country songs. They had the dance floor full and were fun to watch. Here are my photos from the show.
Bob Schneider's Lonelyland | 12/19/22 | Saxon Pub | Our second stop on Monday was Bob Schneider's Lonelyland at the Saxon Pub. Bob's all-star band included Bruce Hughes on bass and Danny Levin on cello, fiddle, and keyboards. As usual, Bob had a nice mix of songs, and was pretty hilarious between songs. They closed the show with some improvised Christmas songs that were highly entertaining. You can see the setlist and stream or download a recording of the evening here, and here are my photos from the show.
Tomar and the FCs | 12/19/22 | Palmer Events Center | On this Monday night, my friend Larry Muller and I hit three music venues on his last night in town. The first was Tomar & the FCs at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. They played their brand of soul and R&B, with some good original songs and classic soul covers. Here are my photos from the show.
HeartByrne | 12/17/22 | Empire Garage | A super fun evening at HeartByrne's "Holiday 'Glow' Party" at Empire Garage. As usual, they played high energy versions of songs by the Talking Heads and David Byrne, but for this evening, they spiced things up with neon stage outfits, dayglow accessories, and black lights, which made everything extra vibrant. This was the first time that I've seen them with their new front man Darin Murphy, who replaced founder Andy Harn (who is taking a hiatus to spend more time with his family). Darin proved to be an excellent replacement, and the band was kicking on all cylinders, so the show was "same as it ever was", in other words, a fantastic performance. Here are my photos, and here is my friend Larry's video of "Burning Down the House" from the show.
Ali Holder's Holiday Revue | 12/16/22 | Sagebrush | My out-of-town friend Larry Muller invited me to join him at Sagebrush for this event, which included five local Austin bands. First up was Ben Jones, playing solo acoustic guitar. He is known as half of the duo Beat Root Revival, but is a good entertainer as a solo performer as well. He has strong, expressive vocals, and a heavily percussive playing style on his acoustic guitar. Next up was Ali Holder. She has a nice voice, and her 5-piece band played moody, ethereal country rock. Then came Graham Wilkinson, who has a nice voice, and played some good country rock songs. The highlight of his set for me was when he did an interesting version of David Bowie's "Modern Love". The next act was Buffalo Hunt, which was my favorite of the evening. The band's sound is hard to describe, but it is driven by lead singer Stephanie Hunt's emphatic vocals, interestingly eclectic lyrics, and strong stage presence. Musically, her band has a spare sound with most of the instrumental sound provided by electric piano and bass guitar, along with an excellent drummer. I'll definitely be looking out for their future shows. The final act was Harvest Thieves, who are a solid country rock act. However, I understand that the band usually includes Annah Fisette, a female vocalist who also plays keyboards and mandolin. She wasn't present on this night, which may have kept the band from being as interesting as they might have been otherwise. All in all, and excellent night of music. Here are my photos from the show.
Shawn Colvin & Shannon McNally | 12/12/22 | The 04 Center | A really fun night of music. Both Shawn Colvin and Shannon McNally are talented singer songwriters, and excellent acoustic guitar players. I had expected them to mostly swap songs, but was pleasantly surprised when they accompanied each other on most of their songs, and sang beautiful harmonies with one another on many. Shannon also played harmonica on a couple of songs, which she said was only the second time she had ever done that (the first being the previous night in Houston). Shannon played a number of songs from her "Black Irish"record, and Shawn played a number of her best known songs, including "Get Out of this House" and "Sunny Came Home". They closed with three nice covers of Bob Dylan, The Band, and Neil Young. But more than the music, what made the night exceptionally fun was their witty banter between songs. They cracked each other and the audience up with funny stories and remarks. All in all it was a really fun evening. Here are my photos from the show.
Chuck Prophet & Kelly Willis | 12/11/22 | C-Boy's Heart & Soul | I was fortunate enough to be able to see what was listed as a "secret show" with Kelly Willis and Chuck Prophet. It turned out that it was an after-show for a wedding party that had happened earlier at the club. Kelly Willis opened accompanied by only a guitar player (who played banjo on one song). She sang a number of her best known songs, many written by her husband Bruce Robison. Then came Chuck Prophet with his band The Mission Express, which includes his wife, Stephanie Finch, who sings, and plays keyboards, accordion, and guitar. I only saw Chuck perform this past year for the first, and I don't know why I had not discovered him earlier. He is a very entertaining performer who really interacts with his audience throughout his shows, and he is an excellent singer and guitarist as well. He closed as he often does with a rocking version of "You Did (Bomp Shooby Dooby Bomp)". Here are my photos from the show.
Punch Brothers and Béla Fleck: My Bluegrass Heart | 12/09/22 | Paramount Theatre |
an outstanding night of bluegrass music with Bela Fleck and Punch Brothers at the Paramount Theater. Bela Fleck's band began
the night with his My Bluegrass Heart band. The band features world-class bluegrass players, with Bela Fleck on banjo, Sierra Hull on mandolin,
Michael Cleveland on fiddle, Bryan Sutton on guitar, Mark Schatz on bass, and Justin Moses on dobro. They played an all-instrumental set with
songs from the recent award winning "My Bluegrass Heart" album, and other songs from Bela Fleck's catalog, with amazing solos by each
instrumentalist. Members of the Punch Brothers came out to join them on several songs as well.
The second set was by the Punch Brothers, who consist of mandolinist Chris Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny, and violinist Gabe Witcher. They are also all outstanding players, but the Punch Brothers are driven by leader Chris Thile's tenor and falsetto vocals, with harmony vocals from other band members on some of the songs as well. The highlight for me was the encore set in which the bands joined together. First Chris Thile and Bela Fleck came out and performed a song. Then all eleven players came out and played together on several closing songs, with multiple amazing solos by pairs of banjos, mandolins, fiddles, guitars, and standup bass. Here are my photos from the show. |

Spud Boy All-Stars | 12/08/22 | FarOut Lounge & Stage | A super fun time, along with many jamily friends, enjoying the Spud Boy All-Stars tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band at the Far Out Lounge. The band included Joe Faulhaber (Guitar/Vocals) and Trever Nealon (Keyboards) from DeadEye, Jenna Watters (Vocals) from The Watters, Evan Bozarth (Bass) from HeartByrne, and Keith Laudieri (Drums) from Touch of Trey. It was my first time to see the band. They did a great job on Jerry Garcia's original songs, as well as covers by Jimmy Cliff, The Band, Bob Dylan, Peter Rowan, and other songs that were performed by the Jerry Garcia Band. Here are my photos from the show.
Madam Radar, C.C. Adcock, and Suzanna Choffel | 12/07/22 | Guero's Oak Garden | This was Sun Radio's Texas Radio Live 11th Anniversary Show. Suzanna Choffel opened with her nice original acoustic songs. C.C. Adock followed with acoustic versions of his swampy Louisiana tunes. Unfortunately, his planned partner for the show, Tommy Mclain, an 82 year old swamp pop legend, was unable to attend. The closing act was Austin American rock band Madam Radar. They consist of Kelly Green (lead guitar), her husband (acoustic guitar), Kelly's brother Kody Lee (drums), and their friend Violet Lea (bass). It was the first time that I had seen the band, and I was impressed by their eclectic songs, strong vocals, and instrumental skills. Here are my photos from the show.
Little Feat with Nicki Bluhm | 12/04/22 | Paramount Theatre | I really enjoyed Little Feat on their "Waiting For Columbus 45th Anniversary Tour" at the Paramount Theater. I have been lucky enough to see them a number of times over the years, but I was a bit apprehensive because this was the first time to have seen them since the 2019 passing of slide guitar player and vocalist Paul Barrere. Since the band reformed in 1987 after the 1979 passing of Lowell George, Barrere had been the primary slide guitarist, as well as being the lead vocalist on many of their best known songs. But as it turned out, they have found an excellent replacement in guitarist/vocalist Scott Sharrard. Long time drummer Richie Hayward, who had also passed not long ago, was ably replaced by Tony Leone on drums, and who can also sing well. And fortunately, the rest of the band is made up of long time band members Bill Payne (keyboards & vocals), Sam Clayton (percussion & vocals), Kenny Gradney (bass), and Fred Tackett (guitar, mandolin, & trumpet), and they are all still playing well. The band played almost all of the songs from their great 1987 live album, "Waiting For Columbus" in sequence. They extended many of the songs with longer jams than on the original album, which worked for me. The opening act was singer/songwriter Nicki Bluhm, who joined Little Feat on "Dixie Chicken" and "Willin". They finished up the show with one post-Lowell George song, a rocking version of "Let it Roll". Overall, the show exceeded my expectations, and it was a great night. Here are the setlist and my photos from the show.
Dumpstaphunk’s Phunksgiving with Travers Brothership | 11/26/22 | Antone's | A great evening of New Orleans Funk at Dumpstaphunk's Phunksgiving at Antone's. I've been a fan of New Orleans R&B since I saw the Neville Brothers and The Meters at Liberty Lunch in the 1980's and '90s. Since those bands are no longer performing, I think that Dumpstaphunk has been the best band in the genre. Of course, they come by it naturally with two children of Neville brothers (Ivan Neville on vocals and keyboards and Ian Neville on rhythm guitar), and two former members of the Neville Brothers' band (Tony Hall on bass, guitar and vocals and Nick Daniels III on bass and guitar). The band also includes excellent performers on drums, trumpet, and trombone. I was impressed by the opening band, Travers Brothership, from North Carolina, who played a nice of mix of blues, rock, and R&B. Here are my photos from the show.
The Last Waltz Revisited | 11/23/22 | The Far Out Lounge | The 14th Annual The Last Waltz Revisited at the Far Out Lounge. Each year on Thanksgiving eve, Austin musicians show off their talents by recreating The Band's historic 1976 concert, which featured guest appearances by notable artist including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, and many others. I am always amazed by the talent shown by Austin artists in recreating these well known songs. All of the performers were excellent, but some of my favorites included Emily Gimble as Dr. John on "Such a Night", Graham Weber as Neil Young on "Helpless", The Watters (Daniel and Jenna) as The Staple Singers on "The Weight", Suzanna Choffel as Joni Mitchell on "Coyote", Guy Forsyth as Muddy Waters on "Mannish Boy", and Graham Wilkinson as Bob Dylan on "Forever Young". They always finish off the night with the entire ensemble performing "I Shall Be Released", which was a great finish to an amazing night. Here are brief video clips of each song and my photos from the show.
Ty Segall (solo acoustic) with Lindsey Mackin (of Annabelle Chairlegs) | 11/21/22 | Hotel Vegas | A solo acoustic performance by Ty Segall at Hotel Vegas. He is a garage rocker who normally plays with a band, but on this tour he is playing acoustically on 6 and 12 string guitars. It was my first time to see him, and I enjoyed his high energy singing, and heavily percussive guitar playing. The opener was Lindsey Mackin, who also usually plays with an electric band, Annabelle Chairlegs. She also played solo acoustic on this evening. Her band's style is almost punkish rock, and her acoustic versions of her songs had similar intense energy. Here are my photos from the show.
TAUK Moore (TAUK + Kanika Moore) with Dodo and Blackillic | 11/19/22 | Empire Garage | An excellent show by TAUK with Kanika Moore at Empire Garage. TAUK is a four piece rock-fusion band that primarily plays instrumental music, but they were joined on this tour by guest vocalist Kanika Moore. Moore is a charismatic soul/R&B singer who has a strong voice and a lot of stage presence. I enjoyed her songs with the band, but I actually preferred TAUK's songs without her, because they allowed them to venture into the more eclectic jazz funk prog-rock territory which makes them unique. There were two opening bands. The first was jazz fusion quartet Dodo. The next was Blackillic, an entertaining pair of young rappers, who were backed by a drummer. Here are the setlist and my photos from the show.
Gaelic Storm | 11/18/22 | 3Ten Live | A fun night of Celtic music by Gaelic Storm at ACL 3Ten Live. In addition to excellent music featuring fiddle, bagpipes, tin whistle, and accordion, there was plenty of crowd interaction, including a couple of trips into the audience by band members, and a finale standing on the bar. I also was surprised to learn that their (originally British) guitar player and vocalist Steve Twigger has been an Austin resident for the past 15 years. Here are my photos from the show.
Lettuce | 11/12/22 | Stubb's | A fun show of funky jams courtesy of the band Lettuce. My highlights included their first set jam with guest sitar player Indrajit Banerjee, and their second set's cover of Archie Bell & The Drells' "Tighten Up". Plus a bunch of tight and funky original tunes and covers that had the crowd dancing all night. Here is the setlist, an audio recording, and my photos from the show.
Spafford | 11/10/22 | Antone's | A fantastic show! It was my first time to see them and they are definitely now on the list of my favorite jam bands. They came equipped with their own sound board and lighting system, which made for great sounds and visuals. It was also my first time to see the young Austin jam band Viben & The Submersibles, and I was quite impressed by them as well. Here is the setlist, and my photos from the show.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard with Leah Senior | 10/28/22 | Stubb's | Part of Levitation Fest 2022. The headliners were King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, who are an Australian band who are generally considered to be a psychedelic rock band, but a good number of their songs seemed like punk-ish acid rock, which were accompanied by a very active mosh pit. The opener was Leah Senior, an Australian folk rocker. Her style seemed a bit out of place at a psychedelic music festival, but she did join King Gizzard during a hard rocking climactic portion of their set. The second band, Hooveriii (pronounced "Hoover three"), definitely fit into the psych-rock category, with some of their songs displaying their California roots with an almost 60's vibe. Here is a (partial)audio recording, and the setlist, of King Gizzard's performance, and my photos from the show.
2022 ACL Hall of Fame Induction | 10/27/22 | ACL Moody Theater | An annual event, and this year Joe Ely and Sheryl Crow were inducted into the ACL HOF. I've been a Joe Ely fan since the 1970's, so I was really glad to see his induction and performance. His portion of the show included his former bandmates David Grissom, Lloyd Maines, Davis McLarty, and Jimmy Petit in the band, with performances by Marcia Ball, Rodney Crowell, and co-Flatlanders Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. Sheryl Crow's portion included Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, Jess Wolfe of Lucius and Brittney Spencer, and Sheryl's long-time guitarist Peter Stroud. As always at this annual event, great performances and outstanding production. You'll be able to see it on TV in January, 2023. You can find more details (and better photos) at this link and here are my photos from the show.
DeadEye | 10/22/22 | Rancho Relaxo | Another incredible night of Grateful Dead tunes by DeadEye at Rancho Relaxo. There was a good turnout of Rancho vets, and a bunch of new faces, all of whom had a great time, judging by all of the smile, smile, smiles. Here are my photos from the show.
Andy Frasco & the U.N. with Little Stranger | 10/21/22 | The Mohawk | A really fun show. Andy Frasco is a crazy guy who waved a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey around, solicited mushrooms from the audience, and came out in the crowd during a rocking version of "Hava Nagila". His band was equally fun and energetic. The opener was a pair of hip-hop artists from Philadelpia, Little Stranger. Although not normally my style of music, they were creative and funny, and even played their own real instruments. Here are my photos from the show.
Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets | 10/18/22 | Bass Concert Hall | An impressive performance by Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets band. The band was led by Pink Floyd drummer and co-founder Nick Mason, and included Spandau Ballet guitarist Gary Kemp, longtime Pink Floyd touring bassist Guy Pratt, guitarist Lee Harris, and keyboardist Dom Beken. The concert focused on Pink Floyd's lesser known early works, specifically from their albums prior to Dark Side of the Moon. The show featured tributes to the two deceased members of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett and Richard Wright. I particularly enjoyed the songs from Pink Floyd's "Meddle" album, especially the the second set's extended version of "Echoes". Here is the setlist, a review (although of a much earlier show, it accurately describes this one), and and my photos from the show.
Billy Strings | 10/13/22 | Stubb's | Another incredible show by Billy Strings and his outstanding band. He continues to amaze me by the skill, variety, and energy of his shows. This was a 34 song marathon that extended well beyond the extended curfew, and the entire performance blew me away. And even better because I was in the midst of many friends from the Austin jamily. Here is the setlist, a review with some videos, and my photos from the show.
Fennario Flats | 10/07/22 | Radio Coffee and Beer Garden | A fun after-show following my day at the ACL Festival, with lots of Jamily friends in attendance. Fennario Flats hasn't played together in several years, but they sounded as great as ever on their acoustic covers of Dead and Jerry Garcia.
ACL Festival 2022 | 10/07/22 | Zilker Park | I primarily went to see Billy Strings. I also looked forward to seeing Asleep at the Wheel, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, and The Chicks, but I didn't know much about any other bands. As it turned out former Snarky Puppy keyboard player Cory Henry was excellent, and London-born R&B/soul singer Gabriels was really entertaining as well. Other interesting bands, all led by female vocalists, included Cassandra Jenkins, Lilyisthatyou, Gayle, L'Imperatrice, and Benee. And as I had expected, Billy Strings and his band killed it, and were by far the highlight of my day. But the weather was nice, and I had a good day overall. Here is Billy Strings' setlist, a fan shot video of the entire set, and my photos from the day at the festival.
Roger Waters "This is Not a Drill" | 10/06/22 | The Moody Center | Roger Waters' "This is Not a Drill" performance had the most impressive technical set up I have seen at a concert, with a large screen the length of a basketball court, and amazing videos throughout. They also had a flying sheep and a flying pig. Roger Waters sounded good, as did his band, and they played music from all phases of Pink Floyd and Waters' solo career. Our seats were up high but centered, so we were far from the stage, but had a great view of the big screen. Here is a review which includes some photos and video clips of "Wish You Were Here", "Sheep", and "Comfortably Numb" from the Austin show. And here is the setlist and my photos from the show.
The Marcus King Band with Neal Francis, Ashland Craft, & Dean DelRay | 10/04/22 | Stubb's | Marcus King is a talented young blues-rock guitar player and singer. I enjoyed some of his original songs, and he did a great job on covers such as Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross", the Allman Brothers "Mountain Jam", and the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses". The first opening act was a young solo woman country singer Ashland Craft. She was followed by the Neal Francis Band, whom I have seen twice before, and really liked. Neal Francis plays keyboards and sings, and he and his tight band plays a variety of styles ranging from funk to jammy soul to hard rock. Marcus King concluded the fun night by bring the Neal Francis Band and Ashland Craft on stage for a rollicking encore of Leon Russell's "Delta Lady." For some reason the full setlist is not avaiulable on line, but it was very similar to this setlist from a few nights earlier. Here are my photos from the show.
Poguetry: Songs of the Pogues Spider Stacy and Cait O'Riordan with The Lost Bayou Ramblers | 9/30/22 | Scoot Inn | The show featured two original member of the Pogues, Spider Stacy, who sang lead and played tin whistle, and Cait O'Riordan, on bass and who also sang lead vocals on a number of songs. They were backed by The Lost Bayou Ramblers, a Cajun band from Lafayette, Louisiana. The Lost Bayou Ramblers opened up with some lively Cajun tunes, and were joined by a guest accordion player (name?) from Austin. Then, without taking a break, Spider Stacy and Cait O'Riordan came on stage, and the music of the Pogues began immediately. They sounded great performing the Pogues' most well known songs, and a very enthusiastic crowd sang along with just about every song and had a great time. Here are my photos.
Robert Earl Keen | 8/29/22 | ACL Live | This show was billed as Robert Earl Keen's final Austin performance (although he held a pop-up show the following night at Cosmic Coffee). It was an excellent show, but a bit bittersweet knowing that this could be the last time we see him perform live. His band included long time members Bill Whitbeck on bass, Tom Van Schaik on drums, and former member of Austin's Milkdrive Brian Beken on on electric guitar and fiddle. But a pleasant surprise for me was the addition of Beken's Milkdrive bandmate Noah Jeffries, whom I have seen frequently in recent years with The Deer and Fennario Flats, on acoustic guitar. The set include staples including "Feelin' Good Again", "Merry Christmas from the Family", and "The Road Goes on Forever", as well as some newer material. The first encore was Keen's solo performance of Jerry Jeff Walker and Guy Clark songs on what he said a guitar that previously belonged to Jerry Jeff Walker. The band then joined for two appropriate final songs, "Walking On", and "I'm Coming Home". Although none of the hoped for special guests showed up, that was almost made up for by the outstanding opening set by singer/songwriter Todd Snyder. As usual, Snyder was extremely funny telling stories between songs. All of his songs, which ranged from poignant to hilarious, were interesting and highly entertaining. Here are the setlist (actually from the night before, but very similar) and my photos.
Lyle Lovett & His Large Band | 8/26/22 | ACL Live | An outstanding show by Lyle Lovett and His Large Band at ACL Live this Friday. His large band included three guitar players, four horn players, three male vocalists, and keyboard, fiddle, and peddle steel guitar players. Not to mention a hall-of-fame rhythm section of Russ Kunkel on drums and Leland Sklar on bass, who between them have played with, among others, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Buffett, Harry Chapin, Rita Coolidge, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Dan Fogelberg, Art Garfunkel, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Seger, Carly Simon, Stephen Stills, James Taylor, Joe Walsh, Steve Winwood, Neil Young, and Warren Zevon. Also, the band was joined about halfway through by Lyle's long-time cellist, John Hagen, who had left the band a few years ago, but who decided to join for these Austin shows. The opening act was Kiwi, an Austin acoustic trio from the '70's who supported Lyle in his early performing days in Austin and College Station. They sounded really good considering the fact that they hadn't performed together as a band in 40 years. Here are my photos.
DeadEye | 8/5-6/22 | Antone's | JerryFest 2022, two nights celebrating the 80th birthday of Jerry Garcia. Special guests for the weekend included Erin Stein, Jenna Watters, Cortney Hesse, and Dane Farnsworth.
The Head & the Heart with Dawes | 8/01/22 | ACL Live | The opener, Dawes, had some good songs, but I thought they were just ok. But I really enjoyed The Head & The Heart's indie folk rock, which relied more on melodies and harmonies, and less on extended guitar solos. Here are the setlist and my photos.
The Drakes, Marshall Hood Band, David Grissom, and Sons of Teisco | 7/31/22 | Continental Club | This was the "Celebrating Aliya" benefit at the Continental Club. Aliya was a well known supporter of Austin music, and the proceeds from the event will help Aliya's family with outstanding hospital and funeral expenses. The show included performances by Sis Deville (whom I unfortunately could not stay to see), The Drakes, Marshall Hood Band, David Grissom, and Sons of Teisco (a substitute for Teisco Del Ray who was unable to appear). Here are my photos.
Nikki DaVaughn and The Avocados | 7/29/22 | C-Boy's Heart & Soul | This was my first time to see Nikki DaVaughn, who is an outstanding soul/R&B singer in the style of Aretha Franklin. The opener, The Avocados, played some excellent surf music. The Avocados also backed up DaVaughn, along with Trevor Nealon of Band of Heathens and DeadEye, and they proved be outstanding soul/R&B musicians as well. Here are my photos.
Carmelo Haze with Lester Rey and Pelegrisa | 7/27/22 | 3Ten Live | Caramelo Haze was celebrating the release of their first album, NOESTASAQUI, in their first public performance. Carmelo Haze includes members of Dos Santos, Nemegata, and Grupo Fantasma/Brownout/Money Chicha. Their music is described as "a hybrid of cumbia, psychedelia, synthy electro, and neo-soul". The opener was Chicago Urbano soul singer Lester Rey, with backing by Latin djs Peligrosa. Here are my photos.
Sly Curtis | 7/26/22 | Antone's | Sly Curtis is a 13 piece super-group tribute to the music of Sly and the Family Stone and Curtis Mayfield. The band is led by Hector Ward on vocals and guitar, Pearl Turner on vocals, and Bruce Hughes on bass and vocals. They also have outstanding players on violin and keys, and excellent rhythm and horn sections. Here are my photos.
George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic with The Motet with Shira Elias, Josh Schwartz and Chris Brouwers (formerly of Turkuaz), Soul Rebels, Pimps of Joytime, and and Blue Eye Extinction | 7/23/22 | The Haute Spot in Cedar Park | A great evening of funky music last night at Cedar Park's Haute Spot. It was my first time at the venue and I really liked it. Not too large, with good sight lines, and plenty of air-moving fans and misters that kept it relatively comfortable on what could have been a very hot evening. The show was a stop on George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic's One Nation Under a Groove tour, which is supposed to be George Clinton's final tour, and which featured a strong lineup of supporting acts. The first was the Pimps of Joytime, a funk and soul band from New Orleans and Brooklyn. Next up were the Soul Rebels, a funky New Orleans brass band. Then came The Motet, a funky jam band with guests Shira Elias on vocals, and Josh Schwartz and Chris Brouwers on horns (all formerly of Turkuaz), who really added some energy to the set. The final opener was Blue Eye Extinction, a hip hop and funk band. Then came the headliner, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. I had seen what was supposed to be his final tour a few years ago at the HEB Center. It was a bad venue for the show, and the performance that night was pretty lackluster. But last night's show was just the opposite. The crowd was really into it, and George Clinton and his large troupe of singers, musicians, and dancers "blew the roof off the sucka". Many of my friends were at the show, so it was overall a really fun and memorable night. Here are my photos.
Cazayoux with Nether Hour | 7/22/22 | Sahara Lounge | This was my first time to see Cazayoux, and I really enjoyed them. They are mostly instrumental, and have horns out front, but everyone in the band can solo, including excellent musicians on bass, keyboards, and guitar. They kind of remind me of Snarky Puppy, Karl Denson, or Galactic. They were very tight, and every song was long and danceable. The opener, Nether Hour, played some original southern rock and covers of Meters, Dr. John, and Talking Heads. Here are my photos.
Bob Margolin, Bob Stroger, Anson Funderburgh, Greg Piccolo, and Betty Harris Band with Lindsay Beaver & Brad Stivers | 7/15/22 | Antone's | An excellent blues show that was part of Antone's 47th Anniversary celebration. The openers were Austin-based Lindsay Beaver & Brad Stivers. Betty Harris followed with her band. She had a number of soul hits in the 60's produced by Allen Toussaint, and is still performing at the age of 82. Dallas-based guitarist Anson Funderburgh and Roomful of Blues sax player Greg Piccolo followed along with members of the Antone's House Band including drummer Mike Buck and guitarist/vocalist Mike Keller. The highlight for me were closers Bob Stroger (91 years young), who played bass for many blues legends including Otis Rush and Sunnyland Slim, and guitarist "Steady Rollin" Bob Margolin, who played in Muddy Water's band for a number of years, including at "The Last Waltz". Here are my photos.
Anabelle Chairlegs, Alicia Gail, and Elsa Cross | 7/14/22 | Hotel Vegas | This was a show that featured three woman-led acts. Elsa Cross opened with her four-piece band. Her voice at times reminded me of Grace Slick, and she writes good original rock songs. Tennessee-base singer songwriter who played solo electric guitar. She was making her first Austin appearance. Her songs were very personal to the point that she teared up at times while playing them. Annabelle Chairlegs, led by singer Lindsey Mackin, played a fun, punkish set with her excellent, hard-rocking band. Here are my photos.
The Uranium Savages | 7/09/22 | Texas Popular Culture Museum | A classic Austin band at their annual celebration of 709 (July 9th) or International Eddy Day. It was also the grand reopening of TexPop (the Texas Museum of Popular Culture) at its former location behind Planet K on South Lamar. They are as crazy as ever, with newer songs about Monkey Pox, Cialis, Depends, and building a wall around Austin to keep out Californians (although it should be for keeping out the rest of Texas), and some of their old classics like "Idi Amin is my Yard Man". Here are my photos.
Fleet Foxes with Tim Bernardes | 7/03/22 | Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park | Fleet Foxes is more a favorite of Diane's than mine, but I enjoyed the show. They have many nice melodic songs, lead singer Robin Pecknold has an excellent voice, and the band has some of the most impressive vocal harmonies that I have heard. In fact, at a few points, seven of the eight band members were singing in harmony. The opener was Tim Bernardes, a solo singer-songwriter from Brazil who sang all of his songs in Portuguese. Here are my photos from the show.
DeadEye | 7/01/22 | Lambert's | Another evening of excellent Grateful Dead music by DeadEye at Lambert's with a whole bunch of good friends. Here is the setlist and my photos from the show.
Money Chicha | 6/25/22 | C-Boys Heart & Soul | A late night show by Austin's Money Chicha, which features members of Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. They play "a fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched and percussion-heavy style of music inspired by the sounds of Peru and Colombia in the 60s and 70s. This style of music, sometimes called "chicha" music, is known for its infectious Latin beat, its psychedelic, surf guitar pyrotechnics and its melodies influenced by the indigenous culture of the Andes mountains." I was surprised to find out that the band's keyboard player is Peter Stopschinski, who is better known as a composer of symphonic, string quartet, and choral music, and who has composed music for a choral group that my wife sings in, Panoramic Voices. Here are my photos from the show.
Leo Nocentelli (of The Meters) with Ms. Mack & the Daddies | 6/25/22 | Antone's | Leo Nocentelli, who is best known as lead guitarist for The Meters, has not toured much as a solo artist, and I think the last time that I saw him live was in the 80's or 90's at Liberty Lunch or New Orleans Jazz Fest with the Meters. But he is touring now in support of his new album, "Another Side". The album was originally recorded in 1971 between Meters sessions, and the tapes were lost for many years, only to turn up in California in 2018, and was finally released earlier this year. The album is a surprising change from the New Orleans Funk that he played with The Meters, and instead is made up of acoustic ballads that Nocentelli said were heavily influenced by his love for James Taylor's music. So I didn't really know what to expect at the show. But it turned out to be a great mix of Meter's songs which he played on electric guitar, and songs from the new album which he played on acoustic guitar. All were supported by a strong trio of New Orleans players on keyboards, drums, and bass. The electric material was great as expected, and included Meter's favorites "Fiyo on the Bayou" and "Hey Pocky Way". But I was surprised how much I like the new acoustic material, which sounded much more energetic than on the heavily produced 50-year old recordings. The opener was a new Austin band to me, Ms. Mack and the Daddies. They played a strong set of blues and soul original and covers songs. Ms. Mack has a strong voice and a sassy personality, and her band is really talented as well. Here are my photos from the show.
Summer Jam-Bo-Ree: w/ A-Town GetDown, The Capitol and Outlaws of Funk | 6/24/22 | 3Ten Live | The Outlaws of Funk mixed country songs with funk, The Capitol is a talented young funk band with a charismatic lead singer, and headliner A-Town GetDown is an outstanding funk band that is one of my favorite bands in Austin. All three bands were a lot of fun, and a large energetic crowd made it a great time. Here are my photos from the show.
Kathleen Edwards with John Paul White | 6/23/22 | Stateside at the Paramount | two talented singer-songwriters, John Paul White and Kathleen Edwards at Stateside at The Paramount. John Paul White was originally known as a member of the duo, The Civil Wars. He now performs solo, and this was the first time that we had seen him. He has an outstanding tenor voice, and although his songs tend to be on the sad side, as he joked about, he kept things light with humorous comments between songs. Kathleen Edwards is a Canadian singer, who performed with guitarist and back-up vocalist Will Harrison. She had some popular records in the early 2000's and I saw some excellent performances by her at both ACL Festival and at the Continental Club back then. But she stepped away from the music scene in 2014, launching a coffee house called Quitters in a small Canadian town. She joked about what a bad idea that was, and finally sold the club, and after a badly timed record release in 2020, began touring again in 2022. She still has a really nice voice, is a good guitar player and songwriter, and put on an entertaining show. Here are my photos from the show.
The Guthrie Girls | 6/19/22 | The ABGB | The Guthrie Girls feature Cathy and Sarah Lee Guthrie, daughters of folk-singing legend Arlo Guthrie. They were a bit more country than I expected, and the dance floor was filled with boot skootin' two-steppers. But they did play several songs that Arlo made famous and some other Americana and rock classics. Here are my photos from the show.
Forgotten Space | 6/18/22 | Parish | Forgotten Space is a Grateful Dead tribute band from Dallas. They played a nice mix of well known Dead songs and deep tracks, and also threw in "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" as a Happy Birthday tribute to Paul McCartney. Here is the setlist and my photos from the show.
The Deer with Sydney Wright | 6/17/22 | ABGB | It had been a while since I had seen The Deer, and they reminded me why I like them so much. They have nice melodic tunes, excellent musicianship, and a good level of energy. Sydney Wright opened with some interesting looped pop-rock. Here are my photos from the show.
HeartByrne | 6/11/22 | Far Out Lounge & Stage | Another fun night of Talking Heads music
Steely Dan with Jeff Lofton Quartet | 6/05/22 | ACL Moody Theater | An excellent show by Steely Dan. Our original tickets for the show were from December, 2019 (the first delay was not covid related), but it is was worth the wait. As usual, Donald Fagen had an ultra-skilled and tight band. They played many of the old favorite Steely Dan songs, although there are too many for them to have played them all. The opener was the Jeff Lofton Quartet, an Austin-based jazz quartet. Here is the setlist and my photos from the show.
Old Crow Medicine Show with Molly Tuttle & Ray Benson | 5/31/22 | ACL Moody Theater | Part of the "Paint This Town Tour 2022". It was an outstanding show. Molly Tuttle is a talented young singer, songwriter, and flat-picking guitar wizard. She opened unaccompanied with several of her own songs and some interesting covers. Then she was joined by a couple of members of Old Crow Medicine Show on a couple of more numbers. Old Crow Medicine Show is an Americana string band based in Nashville. They played a wide range of styles including country, rock, old-time string music, and western swing. Everyone in the band played multiple instruments with a lot of showmanship, including having their instrument tech coming out at one point and displaying some impressive baton twirling skills. Midway through their set, they welcomed surprise guest Ray Benson, who played three songs with them. Towards the end, Molly Tuttle came out and joined the band, showing off her banjo playing, to go along with her guitar-playing talent, on a number of songs. The band's encore was ZZ Top's "Tush", capping the evening with a high energy finish. Here are my photos from the show.
Joe Marcinek Band featuring George Porter Jr. | 5/28/22 | Antone's | A great show with Joe Marcinek (guitar) and George Porter, Jr. (world's greatest bass player). The band also included Michael Lemmler on keyboards and and Terrence Houston on drums fom the George Porter Trio. They played some Meters New Orleans Funk classics, original funky jam songs by Marcinek, and closed with two Grateful Dead songs, "Sugaree" and "Franklin's Tower". They actually had three more songs on their setlist, but ran out of time. I wish they could have played longer. Here are my photos from the show.
Matt Hubbard with Adam Ahrens with Bros Fresh | 5/23/22 | C-Boys Heart & Soul | Matt played piano, harmonica, accordion, and trombone, while Adam played acoustic guitar. They alternated songs in a wide variety of styles, and it was a fun time. The second act was a soul & hip-hop act, Bros Fresh. Here are my photos from the show.
James McMurtry with Luka Dvorak | 5/21/22 | Continental Club | James McMurtry always puts on a good show, and he performed a number of new songs that we had not heard before. I stayed for the beginning of the late act, Luka Dvorak, while waiting out a severe thunder storm. Dvorak plays what he calls Brooklyn Twang, and he was pretty entertaining. Here are my photos from the show.
Panic Stricken and A Live One | 5/20/22 | Scoot Inn | Austin Jamily Spring Jam-Bo-Ree, which featured A Live One (Phish Tribute Band) and Panic Stricken (Widespread Panic Tribute Band). Here are my photos from the event.
Bombino | 5/18/22 | Stateside at the Paramount | Bombino is a Nigerian Tuareg singer-songwriter, guitarist, and band leader. I had seen him only once before at New Orleans Jazz Fest a number of years ago. He has a bluesy style of playing that features some reggae-like sounds, but his sound is unique and unlike anything I've heard before or since. He played both acoustic and electric guitars, backed up by three others who played bass, rhythm guitar, and both African and western percussion. He sings in his native Tamasheq language, which was not understandable, but very expressive. It was a good show, and I'd recommend that others see him if they have the chance. Here are my photos from the event.
The Dojo Mini-festival | 5/14/22 | Ranch Relaxo | I had an amazing time with lots of great friends at The Dojo mini-festival at Rancho Relaxo on Saturday. Five bands played different style of jam music, which included Magic Beans, TryMore MOJO, Kind Beats, Hash Cabbage, and Hive Mind Honey. Here are my photos from the event.
Old 97's with Dawn & Hawkes | 5/13/22 | Far Out Lounge & Stage | I really enjoyed this Old 97's show. They rocked it with their upbeat alt country songs in front of an enthusiastic crowd. I also liked the indie-folk opener Dawn and Hawkes, a couple from Austin's whom I had not seen before. Here is the setlist and my photos from the show.
Patti Smith | 5/07/22 | ACL Moody Theater | It had been many years since I had seen Patti Smith. She still puts on a great show with so many good songs and a lot of fun interplay with the audience. Here is the setlist, videos of "Because the Night" and "Gloria", and my photos from the show.
DeadEye | 5/06/22 | Half Step | The Grass is Dead play bluegrass versions of Grateful Dead songs as well as some other interesting covers. They were joined during the second set by Austin's Max Moscoe on keyboards. Here is the setlist and a video of "Deal", and my photos from the show.
The Grass is Dead | 5/05/22 | Continental Club | The Grass is Dead play bluegrass versions of Grateful Dead songs as well as some other interesting covers. They were joined during the second set by Austin's Max Moscoe on keyboards. Here is the setlist, and my photos from the show.
13 Guitar Rumble | 5/02/22 | Continental Club | A tribute to guitar great Link Wray, ending in the big finale which included all 13 guitar players on stage playing "Rumble" at the same time! Participants included Eve Monsees, Mike Buck, Rick Broussard, Thierry Le Coz, Speedy Sparks, Grady Pinkerton, Jason Crisp, Vic Gerard, John X Reed, Mike Vernon, Teisco Del Rey, Cid Sanchez, Rosie Flores, and Freddie Steady Krc. Here are my photos from the show.
Flyjack | 4/29/22 | Far Out Lounge & Stage | Austin funk and soul band Flyjack celebrated the arrival of vinyl records of their most recent album, "Pan Am". The opener was a bluesy, psychedelic rocker Cody Jasper.
Old Settler's Music Festival 2022 | 4/22-23/22 | Tillman, TX |
Day 1 (Friday): Old Settlers had an outstanding line-up and was alot of fun this year. It's hard to pick out highlights
because all of the bands were really good. Day one included Sir Woman, Brownout, American Aquarium, Dustbowl Revival, Steep Canyon Rangers,
The California Honeydrops, The Del McCoury Band, Leftover Salmon, and JJ Grey & Mofro.
Day 1 photos Day 2 (Saturday): Another great day. I love Railroad Earth, Galactic, Peter Rowen, and Flaco Jimenez, so those were all highlights. All of the other bands which included Elle Townley, Los Texmaniacs, We Banjo 3, The Suffers, Sierra Hull, and Del McCoury Band were really good as well. Day 2 photos |
||
Skull & Roses 2022 | 4/7-10/22 | Ventura County, CA Fairgrounds |
Day 1(Thursday): The bands, Stu Allen & Mars Hotel, Reckoning, and Brown-Eyed Women played all Dead music, and Steely Dead combined
Dead with Steely Dan. Brown-Eyed Women was an all-female tribute to The Grateful Dead. "Reckoning" was a special acoustic performance
honoring the 1981 Grateful Dead live double album of the same name. The lineup included Dark Star Orchestra members guitarists Rob Eaton and
John Kadlecik, keyboardist Rob Barraco, and bassist Skip Vangelas. One thing that was cool that both Reckoning and Stu Allen's band played
historic instruments from the "Dusty Strings" exhibit, which featured ten stage-played Grateful Dead guitars and basses.
Day 1 photos Day 2 (Friday): A bunch more Grateful Dead music, plus Jackie Greene who played mostly original music, Jerry's Middle Finger who played all Jerry Garcia Band material, and Pink Talking Fish, who mixed Dead music with songs by Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, and Phish. The highlight was Dark Star Orchestra who celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 1972 European tour with a recreation of London's Wembley Empire Pool show, which fell 50 years to the day earlier on April 8, 1972. All of the other bands were good, but I was especially impressed by China Cats from Santa Cruz, CA. Day 2 photos Day 3 (Saturday): Another day that showcased a wide variety of Dead styles. Marcus Rezak & Shred is Dead focused on guitar shredding tunes. Electric Waste Band played fun rocking tunes (and had Bill Walton on percussion). Roots of Creation played Dead songs in a reggae style. The Alligators played only Pigpen songs. Cubensis featured guest guitarists including John Kadlecik. Circles Around the Sun was probably my favorite of the day, with their original Dead-influenced psychedelic jams. The first big disappointment of the weekend is that both of the two main headliners, Melvin Seals & JGB and Oteil & Friends had their sets cut seriously short due to "technical difficulties". Both bands sounded great, with JGB featuring Melvin Seals on organ and John Kadelcik on guitar. Oteil had Eric Krasno on guitar, and Melvin Seals sat in on organ on a few songs. Day 3 photos Day 4 (Sunday): The final day of Skull & Roses was a bit shorter, but packed with great music. Moonalice featured vocalists sisters Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen, and also Lester & Dylan Chambers. Lester, who sang and played harmonica, was one of The Chambers Brothers who had hit songs in the 1960's. His grandson Dylan is an excellent singer as well. Keller Williams' Grateful Grass tore it up with bluegrass versions of Grateful Dead classics. Soul Rebels Brass Band brought some New Orlands jazz, soul, funk, and hip-hop to the festival. Phil Lesh and Friends sounded great and closed the festival in style. His band included guitarist/vocalist Stu Allen (Melvin Seals & JGB/Jerry Garcia Band), guitarist/vocalist Grahame Lesh (Terrapin Family Band/Midnight North), multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby (Robert Randolph & The Family Band/Susan Tedeschi Band), and drummer John Molo (Bruce Hornsby & The Range/The Other Ones). All in all it was a wonderful weekend of music, spent with many Austin friends, and like-minded Deadheads from all over. Day 4 photos |

HeartByrne | 4/02/22 | Paramount Theater | Celebrating their 10-year anniversary as a band. The proceeds benefitted The Other Ones Foundation. Last night was an outstanding show by HeartByrne at the Paramount Theater. They were celebrating 10 years of paying tribute to and playing the music of the Talking Heads. Their special guests were Kevin Russell (of Shinyribs), Walker Lukens, and Tomar Williams (of Tomar & the FCs). HeartByrne pulled out all the stops with many thematic elements from the movie "Stop Making Sense". The crowd stood and danced throughout the show, and was as rowdy as I have seen at the Paramount, so it was a really fun time. Here are my photos from the show.
HONKTX! | 4/02/22 | Mueller Lake Park | I saw seven different brass and street bands. My favorites were the largest and most fun, Minor Mishap Marching Band, and Western African drum/dance band Bramaya. I also saw Officially Unofficial, Epic Funk Brass Band, MEOWNOW Brass Band, The Numbers, and Yes Ma'am Brass Band. Here are my photos from the afternoon.
Thievery Corporation | 4/01/22 | Emo's | On their "Outernational Tour V.2". It was amazing show. They played their interesting mix of world music styles which include elements of reggae, dub, hip hop, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Brazilian music. The opening band Boostive, who describe themselves as playing "dub-hop soul", were good as well. Here are my photos from the show.
Yonder Mountain String Band with Tony Kamel | 3/24/22 | Scoot Inn | Yonder Mountain String Band played their jamgrass style of bluegrass originals and covers. Highlights for me were their covers of Lou Reed/Velvet Underground's "Rock 'n' Roll" and Talking Head's "Girlfriend is Better". I was especially impressed by Allie Kral's fiddle playing and vocals. Austin's Tony Kamel opened with solo versions of his original songs on guitar and banjo. Here are my photos from the show.

Lucy's 10th Annual South by South Austin Fried Chicken Revival (Day 4) | 3/19/22 | Lucy's Fried Chicken South Congress | For my final show of SXSW 2022, I returned to Lucy's Fried Chicken for another set by Chuck Prophet. The enthusiastic crowd expressed their support for Chuck's cancer battle with paper plates that said "Good Luck" on one side, and "You Did" on the other, both of which are lines from his songs. It was a great way to end by SXSW, and although there were several more shows that I would have like to have seen, I was out of gas after four days of music, and called it a night. Here are my photos from the show.
Brooklyn Bowl Family Reunion 2022 | 3/19/22 | Empire Garage | First up was Seratones, a soul band that I had tried to see but missed at Luck Reunion. They are led by a charismatic female singer, AJ Haynes, although I prefer my soul music a bit more gritty than their smooth style. Next up was Neal Francis, whom I had enjoyed seeing at Luck Reunion. They put on another good performance here. Then came White Denim. I had not seem them in a number of years. They still have an eclectic style, led by founding members James Petralli on vocals & guitar and Steve Terebeckion bass. I only stayed for one Grateful Dead cover song by Susto es Muerto (Susto is Dead) before deciding to head back to Lucy's for another Chuck Prophet set. Here are my photos from the show.
Yard Dog 25th Annual March Party | 3/18/22 | ABGB | For as long as I can remember, the Friday afternoon Bloodshot Records party behind the Yard Dog Art Gallery on South Congress has been one of my SXSW highlights. Unfortunately, Yard Dog has moved away from central Austin, so the party this year was hosted by ABGB. The evening include three combinations of players led by Jon Langford. First was Jon Langford and His Fancy Men, a four piece band, who got the evening off to a rocking start. Then came Austin's Wild Seeds, which fit right in with a set of fun, punk-ish music. They were followed by Jon Langford & the Far Forlorn, which added another guitar, two fiddles, and an accordion to his earlier group. Things started to get wild, and Austin's Rosie Flores joined them at the end. Then came The Waco Brothers, in which mandolin player Tracey Dear and guitarist Dean Schlabowske trade off with Langford on lead vocals. They played their usual set of rowdy country/punk music, highlighted by "I Fought the Law". Rosie Flores also joined in for some rollicking craziness at the end of the night. I would add that the lighting at the venue was horrible for photography, with a bright pink spotlight on center stage overwhelming everything else, so my photos are worse than I would have liked. But I think that they suit the mood of the evening, so they will have to do. Here are my photos from the show.
Lucy's 10th Annual South by South Austin Fried Chicken Revival (Day 3) | 3/18/22 | Lucy's Fried Chicken South Congress | I started with Allen Oldie's Band, in part because Brent Baldwin, the director of Diane's choral group, is one of the guitarists. They played fun sixties covers like "Wooly Bully" and "Bend Me, Shape Me". Next was Henri Herbert & His Rocking Band. Herbert is a great boogie-woogie piano player, and a good singer as well. His band included Tjarko Jeen, an excellent rockabilly guitar player. Then came my highlight of the day, Tommy McLain & CC Adcock. Both come from Lafayette, LA. Tommy McLain is a piano player and singer who just turned 82. He began making hit swamp pop records in the 1950's, and hasn't stopped since. CC Adcock is a swamp rock guitar player whom has been supporting McLain for several years. Together they played some fun swampy tunes with a lot of style. They were joined by Charlie Sexton and a female vocalist that I could not identify on several songs. The next performer was the John Doe Folk Trio. John Doe is know as co-founder of LA punk band X, but he moved to Austin a few years ago. Recent performances of his that I have seen have been on the mellow side, but I liked his new material from an upcoming album, which was more upbeat. They were joined towards the end of their set by New Orleans-based vocalist Susan Cowsill. Then came SUSTO, a young band that I had first seen the day before at Willie's Luck Reunion. Once again they played a rocking set that the crowd enjoyed. Last came the big name of the day, the Dream Syndicate. In their heyday of the 1980's, they were a big deal in the neo-psychedelic movement. Many people in the crowd came primarily to see them. Steve Wynn and his band did not disappoint them, which a solid set of loud, guitar-driven psychedelic rock. Here are my photos from the show.
Luck Reunion 2022 | 3/17/22 | Spicewood, TX | I had not expected to attend, but the day before a friend who was going told me how I could procure a ticket. I was really glad that I was able to attend. I saw 20 musical performances at 5 stages. Alcohol was free, and there was a decent variety of food to purchase. My favorite act was Chuck Prophet and his Mission Express Band. Despite being recently diagnosed with lymphoma, Chuck and his band rocked the Saloon venue down. My favorite new discoveries were Neal Francis and SUSTO at the revival tent, and Tami Neilson on the main stage. Neal Francis is a piano player from Chicago who has a cool organ with a giant whammy bar that sounds like a guitar when he plays it. He also has an excellent band. His music included some Queen sounding vocals, Leon Russell sounding piano, and a wide range of musical styles ranging from metal to soul to funk to jam band. SUSTO is a band from Charleston, SC that plays guitar-driven alternative rock songs and has an excellent lead vocalist. Tami Neilson was born in Canada and now lives in New Zealand. She had a bouffant hairdo, heavy blue eye shadow, and a retro western dress with a silver glittery cape. Her songs ranged from western swing and country to R&B. Willie came out and sing a song with her, which she had written after her father's passing, which clearly meant something to Willie given the recent passing of his sister. Other acts that I liked included Charlie Crockett, who surprised me with the range of his songs. I expected just country, but he had blues and Latin-influenced songs as well. I also enjoyed the set by the Lost Gonzo Band with Michael Martin Murphey, who sounded good on all of their '70's progressive country hits. Other good acts included a folk duo from the UK, Ida Mae on the main stage, and singer/songwriters Lily Meola (although I missed Lucas Nelson joining her for her final song), and Aaron Ratiere and Kirby Brown at the Beer Garden Stage. I liked experimental pop star Japanese Breakfast more than I expected, but left after a while to catch the punkish Brooklyn band Sunflower Bean at the Saloon Stage, who put on a good show. The last two acts on the main stage were unannounced guest Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, and Willie Nelson and Family. Jason Isbell and his band rocked harder than I had seen him do since his Drive-by-Trucker days, which I liked. Willie traded songs with his sons Lukas and Michah Nelson. Willie's voice and guitar playing were a bit rough at first, but he sounded pretty good by the end of his set. Bobbie Nelson was of course missed on piano, and her passing was marked by a display projected on the stage backdrop. I was able to capture many good photos throughout the day, but my phone's battery died during Jason Isbell, so I was not able to take any photos of the finl Willie & Family set. Overall, it was a great day, and I'll be back again if I can. Here are my photos from the show.
Southside Psychout 2022 | 3/16/22 | Far Out Lounge & Stage | Our final stop on Wednesday was at the Far Out Lounge and Stage for their Southside Psychout event. We saw five very different bands. First up was Borzoi. They were a power trio that was a bit too noisy for my taste. I like the next band, Population II. They are from Montreal, and are described as "a heavy psych power trio with a sprawling and muscular sound that traverses blues, rock, and sludgy metal." I thought they had a creative and unusual sound that I liked. Next up were Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band. They are a psychedelic jam band from Austin. They have a lot of talent and some good songs, but I thought that they spread themselves thin by mixing too many styles between and within songs (ranging from easy listening, psychedelic, heavy metal, funk, and jazzy sounds). I think they would be better off finding a groove and sticking with it. Next up was Godcaster, "an eccentric weirdo-punk five-piece" from Philadelphia. They were as much performance art as music, but it was hard to take your eyes at them as the lead weirdness shifted from one band member to another. Highly entertaining, and some of the musical elements were good as well. Last up was the headliner, Annabelle Chairlegs. I first saw her a few years ago, and was immediately impressed by her punkish psychedelic sounds. She has definitely matured as an artist, and has a better band that really impressed me. The sound is a bit smoother now, but still has a gritty edge. She is an excellent performer who has a great voice and star-quality stage presence, and I expect to see her go far in the future. Here are my photos from the show.
Hot Club of Cowtown | 3/16/22 | Continental Club | We stopped over at Continental Club between sets, which had A/C and cheaper beer than Jo's, and caught some of Hot Club of Cowtown. I've always enjoyed their blend of hot jazz and western swing, and this day was no exception. Here are a couple of photos from the show.
South by San Jose 2022 | 3/16/22 | Jo's Coffee | Next was couple of sets at South by San Jose at Jo's Coffee. Joseph was a trio of women who had nice harmonies and good voices, but there sound was a bit too pop for my tastes. I came to see Geese, who had a lot of buzz and I expected to like. However, I thought that were not quite punk enough to pull off the punk act that they were trying for, and didn't have enough licks or good enough songs to impress me as an alternative act. Here are my photos from the show.
Lucy's 10th Annual South by South Austin Fried Chicken Revival (Day 1) | 3/16/22 | Lucy's Fried Chicken South Congress | First up was Jesse Dayton. I had seen him play electric with a full band, but never solo acoustic. It turns out that he is an amazing acoustic player, as he described "ripping off Jerry Reed licks" all day long. He was funny and told great stories as well. Next up was Darden Smith with an all-star band that included bassist Roscoe Beck, guitarist David Jimenez, and drummer Alex Marrero. I've been a long-time fan, and Darden played some great new songs and some old material. Kelley Mickwee was also good with her original songs, and Western Youth rocked. Here are my photos from the show.
Flogging Molly with Russkaja and Vandoliers | 3/13/22 | Stubb's | Three high-energy bands at Stubb's. The headliner, Flogging Molly, is described as a "Celtic Punk" band. Their fast, raucous songs had a mosh pit going for much of the night (I was close to it but not in it). The opener, Vandoliers, are a Texas hardcore country punk band. The second band, Russkaja, are based in Vienna, Austria, with members born in both Russia and Ukraine. Between songs, their front man made an impassioned speech condemning Russia's attacks on Ukraine. Their music is described as Ska Punk, but the band calls it "Russian Turbo Polka Metal". You will notice in most of my photos a person in front of me with an Irish flag-colored Mohawk, which earned a shout out from Flogging Molly's lead singer Dave King. All-in-all, a really fun night. Here are a few of my photos from the show.
DeadEye | 3/12/22 | Far Out Lounge & Stage | Another real good time with music by DeadEye and lights by Mad Alchemist Liquid Lite Show and Lysergic Lights, all shared with many good friends. Here is the the setlist and a (crooked) video of "Ripple", which closed out the acoustic set, and a few of my photos from the show.
Caleb Veazey | 3/11/22 | Long Play Lounge East | Caleb Veazey is the son of a friend of mine from college days. He played solo guitar and sang some original songs and a few covers.
Marcia Ball's Pianorama with Zack Morgan Band and Tje & Miggy Milla | 3/10/22 | Mozart's Coffee | A benfit for HOME (Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers), celebrating the birthdays of Marcia Ball and Nancy Coplin. Pianorama includes Marcia Ball, Red Young, Floyd Domino, Nick Connolly, and Johnny Nicholas, with guests Henri Herbert on piano and vocalists Shelly King, Carolyn Wonderland, and Kimmie Rhodes. The Zack Morgan Band with vocalists Tje Austin & Miggy Milla was excellent as well. Here are a few of my photos from the show.
Nobelity Project: Feed The Peace Awards | 3/06/22 | Paramount Theater | Hosted by Turk and Christy Pipken, The Nobelity Project Feed The Peace Awards went to Gary P. Nunn, Bob Livingston, Marcia Ball, Carolyn Wonderland, and Shelley King. Musical peformances included a reunion of the Lost Gonzo Band (Gary P. Nunn, Bob Livingston, John Inmon and Freddie Krc), with guest vocals by Ray Wiley Hubbard. Marcia Ball, Carolyn Wonderland, Shelley King performed together, as did Jimmie Dale Gilmore and John Doe. Bob Schneider and Folk Uke performed, and Butch Hancock led a closing finale of "This Land is Your Land". Here are a few of my photos from the show.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong with Karina Rykman | 3/05/22 | Emo's | Another outstanding high-energy psychedelic funk performance by one of my favorite live bands, with a sit-in by Cloudcord on a couple of songs. For each unique live performance, Carrie and her all-star Laboratorio band collaborate with a different guest artist, ensuring that no two shows are ever the same. Diane & I really enjoyed this show. Carrie and her guests Susanna Choffel, Jaime Ospina (of local band Superfonicos), and Reuben Ramos were all excellent. And the backing band which included bassist Roscoe Beck, guitarist David Jimenez, drummer Alex Marrero, and keyboardist Stefano Intelisano was really good as well. They said they hope to do more of these shows in the future, and I recommend getting to one of them if you can. Here is an article about the show which includes an interview with Carrie about this and other things she has going on.

The band featuring guitarists Charlie Sexton and Lloyd Maines, vocalist Shannon McNally, bassist Glen Fukunaga, drummer Davis McLarty, fiddler Richard Bowden, cellist Brian Standerfer, and his sons Bukka and Bale Allen on accordion/keyboards and percussion. Readings by Terry and his wife Jo Harvey Allen were highly entertaining. And to top things off, their special guest was John Doe, co-founder of X. Here are a few of my photos from the show. The performance was in conjunction with the opening of an art exhibit at the Blanton Museum featuring Terry Allen's work, "MemWars", which includes a three-channel video installation and a related group of drawings. But there was not a single bad performance among the many that came on (which included Donavon Frankenreiter, Eric Gales, LaDonna Gales, Lamar Williams, Jr., Ally Venable, Samantha Fish, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jimmy Hall (of Wet Willie), and Joanne Shaw Taylor), which made it an outstanding and memorable show. Mick's voice sounded great, Keith and Ronnie's guitar playing was just as it should have been, and the rest of the band was really good as well. The overall production including sound, lighting, and video was amazing. Getting in and out was a hassle, even on a party bus, but overall I am very glad that I was able to see the Stones one more time with a fun group of people.
