Albert and Gage 12/24/15 Palmer Events Center At the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. Christine Albert has a greatt voice. She did a number of (too many for my taste) Christmas songs, and several of her beautiful songs that she sings in French. Cris Gage played some impressive guitar and sang lead on a number of songs as well.
Galactic with The Suffers

12/18/15 Emo's The best Galactic show that I can recall having seen. They played their usual tight New Orleans funk, but what made this show stand out was guest vocalist Erica Falls. Opening act the Suffers, from Houston, had the crowd revved up their soul & R&B music led by their own powerful vocalist Kam Franklin. Here is a review.
Rocking Holiday Extravaganza

12/17/15 The Blanton Museum The Texas Choral Consort joined up with eclectic band The Invincible Czars for a non-traditional Christmas show that included "electrified mashups of holiday music and amped-up sing-along classics". This was part of the Blanton Museum of Art's Beat the Rush Series.
!!! (Chk Chk Chk) 12/12/15 The Mohawk !!! (Chk Chk Chk) is a punk dance band. Lead singer Nic Offer danced wildly and came out into the audience throughout the show. Here is a review and some photos.
Spider Stacey with Lost Bayou Ramblers

12/05/15 Continental Club Billed as "Poguetry in Motion", original Pogues member joined with Cajun band Lost Bayou Ramblers to recreate many of the Pogues most well known songs. They did an amazing job of recreating the Pogues' sound, in part because Spider Stacey was an occasional lead singer for the band when Shane MacGowan was not up to it, and his tin whistle playing was always part of their signature sound. Plus, the Lost Bayou Rambler's fiddle and accordian fit right in with the punkish Irish sounds of the Pogues. Here is a review and some photos from the prior night's show at the Continental Club in Houston (I couldn't find anything like this from the Austin show).
Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines with Adam Carroll 12/04/15 Paramount Theater Terri Hendrix as always was entertaining and charming with her original songs, and Lloyd Maines showed off his skills on acoustic guitar. Adam Carroll opened with some nice singer-song writer material.
Ernie Durawa with Bruce Spelman and Mike Roeder of Extreme Heat 12/01/15 Strange Brew Lounge Side Durawa is made up of Ernie Durawa, former drummer with Doug Sahm and the Texas Tornados, along with Chis Alcaraz & Will Knaak. They started off with Doug Sahm numbers. They were then joined by vocalist Bruce Spelman and guitar player Mike Roeder, and it turned into a funky good time.
Papa Mali with special guest, Shelley King

11/06/15 One-2-One Bar I always love Papa Mali's mix of New Orleans funk, soul, blues, and Grateful Dead covers, and this night was no exception. Shelley King joined his band on stage to provide some fine supporting vocals.
Dave and Phil Alvin 11/05/15 Continental Club Another great show by the Alvin brothers and the Guilty Ones, this time featuring songs from their current album, "Lost Time".
HeartByrne

10/31/15 Threadgill's A tremendously fun Halloween party with Talking Heads cover band HeartByrne. The band was dressed up in bacon and fried egg themed costumes, and the crowd was filled with many creative costumes. In the first set, they played a nice mix of well known and lesser known Talking Heads songs. In the second set, they mashed up Talking Heads songs with songs from a number of genres, including Michael Jackson's "Thriller", a hip-hop song, Stevie Wonder's "Superstition", a reggae song, and closed with a "Ghostbusters" mashup, which featured a dancing Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Here are some photos and the setlist.
Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt 10/27/15 Paramount Theater Two great songwriters trading songs and stories.
UB40 10/20/15 The Long Center UB40 has had a split. This was the Ali Campbell, Astro, and Mickey Virtue version. Ali Campbell was the original lead vocalist, so they had the original sound. It was a good show overall, although the sound mix could have been better. Often you could hear the vocals, bass, and drums, while the keyboards and guitars didn't come through much. But the 3 man horn section sounded good. The crowd got into it, and surprisingly for the Long Center, by about halfway through the show, everyone was standing up and dancing. They even let people go up the aisles to the front and didn't make people return to their seats. Here is a setlist and some photos and video clips.
Chris Robinson Brotherhood with Leftover Salmon 10/16/15 Scoot Inn An excellent jamband show. Leftover Salmon opened with their carefree brand of bluegrass-style jam music. The Chris Robinson Brotherhood closed with a set of Grateful Dead style psychadelic jam music. Here is a review with some photos and a setlist.
Drive By Truckers with My Jerusalem 10/15/15 Scoot Inn Drive-By Truckers still rock hard as any band in existence. Unfortunately, advertsised special guest Brent Best, former frontman of Slobberbone was not able to show due to some health issues. Here is a review.
Joe Jackson 10/12/15 Paramount Theater A show where we were fortunate enough to get free tickets from a friend of Diane's who happened to be Joe Jackson's guitar technician. I was impressed with his performance some of his hits as well a lot of his music in a wide range of styles that I had not heard before. Here is a a review and setlist.

10/10/15 Zilker Park I just attended one day this year, on Saturday of week 2, and as I expected, it was the weakest lineup for me that ACL has had. It's pretty pitiful when the two closing acts at a major music festival had zero live musical instruments being played, with only one part-time vocalist on the two stages. Specifically, it was Deadmau5 who played prerecorded electronic clips, and Drake, who was more or less a karaoke act, rapping and singing to prerecorded music, including at times his own backup vocals. A few acts were not too bad including Houndmouth, Modest Mouse, Father John Misty, TV on the Radio, and San Fermin, but overall it was a disappointment. I won't be attending next year unless the line-up improves.
Fitz and the Tantrums 10/02/15 South Congress Hotel A free SxSW show that was part of the Samsung Pay Block Party, with plenty of free food and booze. Fitz and Tantrums kept the crowd dancing with their own songs and a cover of the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams”. a review with a few photos.
The Mavericks

9/26/15 ACL Live at the Moody Theater Another outstanding show by the Mavericks. They are pretty much my favorite live band at the moment. Jimmie Vaughan joined at one point on a rousing version of "Rock Me Baby". Here is a setlist and some excellent photos.
Patty Griffin with John Moreland

9/23/15 Paramount Theater A historic event, celebrating of the blade sign in front of the Paramount Theater for the first time in over 50 years. Here is a review.
Wood and Wire with Whiskey Shivers

9/18/15 Scoot Inn Really enjoyed the tight harmonies and great modern bluegrass playing of Wood & Wire. By comparison, Whiskey Shivers thrash style of bluegrass sounded pretty ragged. Here is a review and some photos.
Steve Earle and the Dukes with The Mastersons 9/17/15 Paramount Theater A rather bluesy show, with some interesting cover choices including "Hey Joe", Donovan's "There is a Mountain", and closing with "Wild Thing". Here is the full setlist.
Bill Chambers and Jimmy LaFave 8/22/15 Threadgills World Headquarters Bill Chambers is the father of Kasey Chambers and is really a talented guitarist.
Weird Al Yankovic 8/20/15 ACL Live at the Moody Theater We went to this with Aaron because he is a big fan. I didn't know if I would like it, but Weird Al was impressive in his ability to perform well in a wide range of styles. Plus, clever lyrics, great costumes, and fun videos made it an enjoyable experience. Here is a review with some photos and a brief video clip.
Shakey Graves, with Riders Against the Storm 8/12/15 Zilker Park Part of KGSR's Blues on the Green series. Austin's breakout Americana star and favorite hip-hop band.
Doug Sahm Tribute for "Sir Doug & the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove"

7/29/29 The Broken Spoke Doug Sahm tribute celebrating the completion of Kickstarter funding for the "Sir Doug & the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove" documentary. Performers included: Jack Ingram, Ray Benson, Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis, Shinyribs (Kevin Russell), Augie Meyers, and Ernie Durawa. Here is a review and some video clips.
Hot Club of Cowtown 6/17/15 Continental Club Aaron was away at camp, so Diane & I took the opportunity to see this hot jazz and country combo's happy hour show.
Charles Bradley and The Relatives 6/05/15 Paramount Theater An evening of soul music.
Jimmie Vaughan and the Tilt-a-Whirl band with special guests Steve Miller, and Lou Ann Barton , with Antone's All-Star Revue

6/03/15 Zilker Park Part of KGSR's Blues on the Green series. Fantastic show celebrating Antone's 40th anniversary. The opening set was an Antone's All-Star Revue with Marcia Ball, Eve Monsees, Derek O'Brien, Denny Freeman, Sarah Brown, George Raines, and Mike Buck. The headliner was Jimmie Vaughan and his Tilt-a-Whirl band with special guests Steve Miller and Lou Ann Barton. You may think of Steve Miller as a mediocre rock performer, but that guy can play some blues guitar. The closing number of "Texas Flood", made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan, gave me chills. The Antone's All Star Recue opened with a tribute to the 40th Anniversary of the Antone's nightclub, and they put on a great display of classic blues.
Cracker and The Whiskey Gentry 5/31/15 Scoot Inn Cracker is one of my favorite bands these days. They performed songs from their recnt albusm that showed off both their rocking side and their Bakersfield country side. Opener Whiskey Gentry weren't too bad with some original rocking country of their own.
The Resentments 5/24/15 Saxon Pub Stopped by for their usual Sunday gig at the Saxon, with Bruce Hughes, Jeff Plankenhorn, and Miles Zuniga.
John Prine and Justin Townes Earl 5/1/15 Bass Concert Hall John Prine's voice is a bit rough these days, but he has so many great songs and tells great stories in between them. Here is a review of a memorable show.
Levitation Fest

5/01/15 Carson Creek Ranch The highlight was the first reunion of The 13th Floor Elevators since the 60's, featuring Tommy Hall’s electric jug along with Roky Erikson, and original-era members Ronnie Leatherman on bass and John Ike Walton on drums. Here is review and some video clips from their performance. Other performers that I saw included: The Flaming Lips, The Black Angels, Nothing, Eternal Tapestry, Mac Demarco, ZZZs, The Myrrors, The Goastt, Los Mundos, and Samsara Blues Experiment. The Flaming Lips had their usual flamboyant stage show, and event organizers The Black Angels weren't bad, but nothing else was very memorable.
Louisiana Swamp Thing & Crawfish Festival

4/25/15 Austin-American Statesman Parking Lot Didn't make Jazz Fest this year, but got a taste at this fun annual event. This year's performers included: Marcia Ball, Chubby Carrier and The Bayou Swamp Band, Crooks, and MarchFourth Marching Band. Marcia Ball was great as usual, Chubby Carrier played his fine zydeco, Crooks are a local Austin country-blues band. The big surprise were the MarchFourth Marching Band. They were a New Orleans style marching band with crazy costumes, 5 percussionists, 6 horn players, and 4 acrobatic dancers who danced among the crowd on stilts. Here are some photos.
2015 Old Settler's Music Festival

4/17/15 Salt Lick Pavilion A rainy day, but worth it for the excellent performers, including: The Mavericks, Sam Bush, Langhorne Slim & the Law, The Infamous Stringdusters, Darlingside, MilkDrive, and Alexander Nobles.
Dr. Dog and Mewithoutyou 4/03/15 Stubb's BBQ As usual, Dr. Dog put on an excellent show with their fine vocal harmonies and energetic brand of psychedelic rock. Here is a setlist and some photos .
North Mississippi Allstars and Anders Osborne

3/28/15 Scoot Inn Billing themsleves as N.M.O., the North Mississippi Allstars and Anders Osborne joined up to create a fine mix of the Dickinson Brothers' Southern blues rock along with Anders Osborne's unique brand of New Orleans soul.

Sir Doug Sahm Tribute Night

3/21/15 Paramount Theater Amazing tribute concert for Doug Sahm in support of a documentary, Sir Doug & The Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove. The House Band included Michael Ramos, Charlie Sexton, Denny Freeman, Mike Buck, Jack Barber, and Julie Christenson. Performers included Freda & the Firedogs reunion, Bizarros, Freddie Krc, David & Hector Saldana (Krayolas), Patricia Vonne, Rosie Flores, Terry Allen, Luluc, Bill Kirchen, West Side Horns (Al Gomez, Louie Bustos, Henry Rivas), C.C. Here is a detailed review of the performances.
Funk x Funk Fest

3/21/15 The Dogwood A great Funk show. The first band I saw was Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds. The came a great show featuring Papa Mali and his fine band, joined by Eric McFadden, an awesome guitarist formerly of P-Funk, and Sunshine Becker who has sung with Grateful Dead spinoff, Further.
Bang-A-Rang! SXSW Day Party

3/21/15 2913 E 13th St A SxSW day party featuring reggae and ska bands. I went specifically to see the Stingers ATX Reunion, specifically because our friend who is Diane's choral director Brent Baldwin is a member of the band. The Stingers ATX are a Ska band that formed in the late '90s, and they have opened for and toured with many well known Reggae and Ska bands through the years. It has been a while since they played together, but they put on a really fun show at this party, and I hope that they don't wait so long for their next reunion.
Albert & Gage with Hank and Shaidri Alrich 3/20/15 El Mercado Some nice bluegrass and acoustic music to end the evening.
Elephant Micah with Joan Shelley 3/20/15 End of an Ear Records Elepant Micah is my friend Ed's nephew. He played some mellow yet interesting original songs at this SxSW showcase. He was also accompanied at the end of his set by similarly mellow couple, Joan Shelley.
