HOW WE BUILT OUR POND

CAN YOU DIG IT?
CAN YOU DIG IT?
We started digging our pond with pick and shovel...

BUCK THE JACKHAMMER
BUCK THE JACKHAMMER
But the limestone rock soon forced us to rent a jackhammer.

DIANE AND MEGAN CELEBRATE

The hole is done. Note the shallow area for bird wading, the wide shelf for plants, and the narrow shelf for bricks to hold down the rubber liner.

THE SANDMAN COMETH
THE SANDMAN COMETH
A little sand is used to pad the bottom of the liner.

CHECK OUT OUR PAD
Carpet padding helps protect the liner on the sides of the pond.

BUCK THE HOSER
After laying in the rubber liner, we fill it with water to help squeeze out any air bubbles.

THE BRICKS ARE LAID
Next, we put in the bricks around the edges on the narrow shelf to hold down the liner.

CAPPING IT OFF
The last step is to fold the liner over the bricks, cut off the excess, and put limestone caprocks on top.

OK, SO IT'S NOT NIAGARA
OK, SO IT'S NOT NIAGARA
We built a small waterfall out of native limestone.  A small pump recirculates and filters the water.

AND NOW WE VEGETATE
AND NOW WE VEGETATE
We planted a water lily and spider lily, pickeral weed, a water iris , columbine, some grasses and ferns in and around the pond.

A PRETTY FLOWER
A PRETTY FLOWER
Our water lily bloomed for most of the summer.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT!

We love to sit by our pond and just watch the fish and listen to the waterfall.
